DANIEL VAUGHAN: Liberal hypocrisy shines in Martha’s Vineyard

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ decision to send fifty illegal immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard, MA, was nothing new. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has been doing similar things to get the attention of Washington D.C. and Joe Biden’s White House for months. But DeSantis picked his target better: Martha’s Vineyard is the vacation playground of many white liberals. Those liberals declared a “humanitarian crisis.”

The “crisis” in Martha’s Vineyard.

Those exact words got sent out by the Dukes County Emergency Management Association, which treated the arrival of these immigrants on par with a natural disaster. Their statement included the combined efforts of all police, fire, and other emergency response groups in that county.

In an interview with reporters, who poured into the region, Lisa Belcastro, a homeless coordinator, said Martha’s Vineyard couldn’t handle the number of people. She said, “We don’t have the services to take care of 50 immigrants, and we certainly don’t have housing … We can’t house everyone here that lives here and works here.” She added that eventually, these people would have to find “someplace else” to live.

Again, fifty immigrants, mainly from Venezuela, triggered an emergency response from Martha’s Vineyard. They’re worried their infrastructure will get overwhelmed. Fifty.

Right now, Joe Biden’s federal response to the immigration crisis on the southern border involves keeping more than 10,000 migrants outdoors, under a bridge. When states like Texas and Arizona complain about this, the left ignores them. It’s apparently okay if Joe Biden keeps tens of thousands of migrants in squalor.

The real crisis on the border.

This is the NBC News report on that bridge:

More than 10,000 migrants, most of them Haitian, are packed under an overpass bridge in Del Rio, Texas, as U.S. border agents struggle to keep up with the surge in the area, according to two senior Department of Homeland Security officials.

Migrants arriving at the makeshift processing center under the bridge are given emergency supplies like water and infant formula and are processed before being taken to a Border Patrol station or Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody.

Not a peep on that from the usual cast of characters who are mad about Ron DeSantis. Nor have these same liberals cared when a record 2.1 million illegal crossers are expected at the southern border in 2022.

According to current numbers:

There have so far been more than two million migrant encounters this fiscal year alone, on top of more than 1.7 million encounters in fiscal 2021. While many of those are returned either via the Title 42 public health order or other methods, a significant number are released into the U.S. to await their asylum hearings — which can take up to eight years.

According to CBP statistics, so far this fiscal year more than 500,000 migrants have been released into the U.S. by Border Patrol on their own recognizance with a court date (called a Notice to Appear) or paroled into the U.S. and enrolled into Alternatives to Detention (ATD). That statistic does not include the final two months of FY22.

Fifty migrants are what some hot spots on the border see cross the border in a few hours, maybe less. Southern states have dealt with the influx for years while Democratic cities virtue signal about being sanctuary cities for immigrants.

The hypocrisy shows up.

And yet, fifty migrants showing up in Massachusetts unexpectedly is enough to cause a humanitarian crisis. Martha’s Vineyard has mobilized an emergency response, and people have organized a Go Fund Me page for the “crisis.” One of the wealthiest areas in the country, with people keeping multi-million dollar summer homes, has a Go Fund Me page.

This story has all the marks of a Babylon Bee article satirizing the issue of illegal immigration. Yet, this is real. The author Tom Wolfe once quipped, “The problem with fiction, it has to be plausible. That’s not true with non-fiction.”

Everyone involved in this story plays up to their roles in a Tom Wolfe book. Liberal pundits applaud the brave people of Martha’s Vineyard for stepping in to help fifty migrants. Again, Ron DeSantis is in the news as another evil Republican. I’m sure commentators will start declaring him worse than Donald Trump.

Out of touch.

It’s unbelievable how out of touch the Democratic Party is with the issue of illegal immigration. Their states and cities, which proclaim themselves as sanctuary cities, cannot even handle fifty migrants. They complain of their resources getting drained. And it’s not just Martha’s Vineyard; we’ve seen similar comments from Chicago, New York, and Washington D.C.

They’re totally fine with saying they support immigration. But when those people show up at their doorstep, they suddenly hate the idea of pushing government resources in that direction and complain that their welfare and emergency response teams are overwhelmed.

You can’t make any of this up. And that’s why this was a good decision by DeSantis and Greg Abbott. The mask is off on the left. Their virtue signaling has proven false.

We need a comprehensive immigration overhaul to fix a very broken system. Maybe this tactic will shake Democrats out of their complacency. But it seems unlikely.
