House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is traveling with certain House leadership members through Asia this week. In a statement, Pelosi’s office said the group’s travels would include visits to “Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan.” Notably absent from the last, after being a prominent part of it in the preceding months, was Taiwan. That is a mistake. Nancy Pelosi should stick to her guns, rebuff Joe Biden, and travel to Taiwan.
The Chinese Communist Party has made loud noises about keeping Pelosi out of Taiwan, even hurling death threats. Shockingly, Pelosi hasn’t received immediate backing from the President. Death threats and insults aimed directly at a sitting U.S. Government official should receive immediate denunciation from any White House. These actions should never be tolerated. But instead, Pelosi is getting mealy-mouthed word salad from the administration.
When asked about Pelosi’s travels, the best Joe Biden could offer was “that the U.S. military doesn’t think her visit is a good idea,” further, he has “refrained from saying publicly if she should make the trip.” In other words, Biden is taking no responsibility and wants no part in this issue. This weakness comes despite Pelosi being a member of his party and Speaker of the House.
China threatens Pelosi and US.
The threats have come from all levels of the Chinese Communist Party. The Wall Street Journal reports, “Chinese leader Xi Jinping told President Biden that ‘those who play with fire will perish by it’ — a phrase an administration official said the Chinese leader has used before over Taiwan.”
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian added other warnings, “The Chinese side has repeatedly made clear to the U.S. side our serious concern over Speaker Pelosi’s potential visit to Taiwan and our firm opposition to the visit … If the U.S. side challenges China’s red line, it will be met with resolute countermeasures. The U.S. must bear all consequences arising thereof.”
The most extreme reaction came from a propagandist for the Chinese Communist Party. Issuing statements on Twitter, he said, “If U.S. fighter jets escort Pelosi’s plane into Taiwan, it is [an] invasion,’ tweeted Hu Xijin, a columnist for the Chinese Communist Party-controlled Global Times. ‘The [People’s Liberation Army] has the right to forcibly dispel Pelosi’s plane and the U.S. fighter jets, including firing warning shots and making tactical movement of obstruction.’ He added, “If ineffective, then shoot them down.”
It’s worth remembering that the best response to all of these statements from the Biden administration is a whimper that the military doesn’t think it’s a good idea for Pelosi to travel to Taiwan. The United States is the strongest military and economic power in the world, yet its leadership is beset by cowardice.
US strength and credibility are at stake.
Nancy Pelosi should go to Taiwan. If she’s removed Taiwan from her travel itinerary for security reasons and plans to show up secretly, that’s one thing. But the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives should not have her schedule and travel dictated by communist dictators or cowardly, inept Presidents.
In a column for the Washington Free Beacon, Matthew Continetti lays out the consequences nicely:
Canceling now would mean that Congress buckled in the face of Chinese threats and the Biden administration wavering. It would establish the principle that Beijing has veto power over the travel plans of senior U.S. officials. It would tell the world that America is more interested in mollifying Xi Jinping than in supporting the democratically elected Tsai Ing-wen. It would be another example of self-deterrence, Biden-style. And America would be weakened.
He is entirely correct in his diagnosis of the situation. This issue isn’t a Democrat or Republican problem; it’s about defending the strength and power of the United States. Projecting our power abroad means standing up to communist thugs like Xi Xinping and the CCP.
Continetti also smartly places the ball back in China’s court, “But who is playing with fire here? Pelosi, by following a precedent set by Newt Gingrich a quarter century ago? Or China, by trying to steamroll the speaker of the House? U.S. foreign policy works best when America acts boldly to create facts on the ground favorable to freedom.”
Go, Nancy, Go.
As a conservative, it’s not often, if ever, I’ve had to say these words, but Nancy Pelosi is right. Pelosi should go to Taiwan and stand there as a symbol of American leadership and power, defying a communist regime that enslaves people, unleashes a pandemic killing millions, and subverts American power and ideals abroad.
Joe Biden must step up to the plate, fulfill the oath of office, and support Pelosi’s trip. His refusal is another example of his cowardice and ineptitude when dealing with a crisis. Pelosi is right, Biden is wrong, and the CCP is evil. These are not difficult points to understand. Pelosi should not accept threats from China or ineptitude from the White House.
Go to Taiwan, Nancy. Stand there for all Americans against the Chinese Communists.
