Indicted Ukrainian-American businessman Lev Parnas has decided that his main defense strategy against campaign finance charges is to make sure he takes down as many people as he can with him — including Attorney General William Barr.
The DOJ has just two words for Parnas: “100% false.”
In an interview with — who else — MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow on Wednesday night, Parnas listed off a bunch of people who he claims knew what he was doing in Ukraine.
Besides Barr, Parnas claimed that President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Trump personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, Victoria Toensing, and Joe DiGenova were all aware of the efforts to get Ukraine to investigate the Bidens, claiming they were all “best friends.”
“Mr. Barr had to have known everything,” Parnas told Maddow.
Barr says no way
DOJ spokeswoman Kerri Kupac disputed Parnas’ allegations as false and said the DOJ position has been unchanged since September when he first heard about Trump bringing up his name in the July 25 Ukraine phone call.
Barr was aghast that his name was brought up by Trump in the call, and has always maintained that he took no actions to get investigations into Ukraine and that 2016 election interference investigations by the DOJ went far beyond just Ukraine.
Besides, those investigations were spearheaded by special prosecutor John Durham, not by Barr.
Barr isn’t the only one who has denied Parnas’ allegations. In fact, no one on Parnas’ list has corroborated a single detail of his accusations. Trump said he doesn’t know Parnas, Giuliani said Parnas acted without his knowledge, and Pompeo said he never met the guy and wasn’t aware of the alleged surveillance of Yovanovitch.
As with every so-called bombshell witness before him, all Parnas has to offer are a bunch of allegations that can’t be substantiated — secondhand accounts and assumptions about the motivations and intentions of Trump and others on his team.
It’s clear that Parnas is seeking to get the attention off his own problems and onto someone else. Of course, the left-wing media eats it up like candy because it confirms their pre-existing Trump-hate and gives them hope that one day, they will get something on Trump that will stick.
Good luck with that.
