Three people were killed and another wounded in a mass shooting on Thursday in a Maryland manufacturing plant.
A law enforcement officer was also wounded while exchanging fire with the shooter, authorities shared.

The scene
“Officers from the Smithsburg Police Department arrived on the scene first and located an injured victim outside of the business,” the sheriff’s office said.
“As deputies arrived on the scene, 3 additional victims, all of whom were deceased, were located inside the business,” the report added.

The shooter
The shooter was later discovered to be a co-worker at the company. He was wounded in the shooting by the officer to stop the shooting.
The shooter and wounded officer were both reportedly taken to a hospital to treat their injuries.

The suspect was not named but was identified as a 23-year-old male from West Virginia.
The type of weapon was not released, but was mentioned in reports as a handgun.
The tragic shooting adds to a growing number of violent shooting incidents nationwide leading to many concerns by Americans. Lawmakers continue to discuss options to increase gun safety as Americans remain divided whether new laws will put a stop to the spike in deadly shootings.
