President Joe Biden has already worked to undo virtually every border security and immigration enforcement policy put in place by former President Donald Trump, which has led to a massive surge of migrants seeking entry at the southern border.
According to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R), the growing crisis is a “self-inflicted wound” brought about by Biden’s short-sighted and ideologically-inspired reversals of his predecessor’s policies, Fox News reported.
He knew “exactly what was going to happen”
Gov. Abbott appeared on Fox News’ America Reports during a visit to the southern border and told co-hosts John Roberts and Sandra Smith that Biden was solely to blame for the current crisis that would almost certainly grow even worse in the coming months.
“It is a self-inflicted wound because, going back to what the Border Patrol officers told me themselves, they informed the Biden administration about this all along, and the Biden administration has known exactly what was going to happen if they refuse to continue to implement the policies that were previously in place,” Abbott said.
The governor pointed to the reversal of two policies in particular as being behind the crisis. The first is the “Remain in Mexico” policy which had asylum-seekers wait in Mexico while their claims were adjudicated. The second policy was one in which migrants caught at the border were quickly sent back to their country of origin instead of being released into the United States.
“These two policy changes is what has led to the influx that we’ve seen,” Abbott said.
Abbott revealed that more migrants have been caught illegally crossing the border in the first few months of this year than were caught during the entirety of 2020 in the Rio Grande Valley sector alone, the New York Post reported.
Empowering the cartels
The governor further accused the president of enabling the Mexican drug cartels to make more money through the smuggling of migrants and illicit drugs, largely by preoccupying Border Patrol agents with a flood of migrants, especially unaccompanied children, while simultaneously trafficking criminals and drugs.
“That’s when the drug cartels, they bring in the more dangerous criminals who get paid more to, or they pay more to the cartels to bring them across the border, including these very dangerous drugs and other things coming across the border, including people from very dangerous countries,” Abbott said.
“And so the cartels know exactly what they’re doing — it’s called flooding the zone — preoccupy the Border Patrol, and that’s when they can wreak the havoc that the cartels seek to wreak,” he added.
Abbott had more harsh words for Biden during the border visit, as he said that the president “does not care about Americans. He cares more about people who are not from this country,” The Texas Tribune reported.
The governor’s visit to the border marked the start of a new initiative known as Operation Lone Star, in which the state has surged resources of its own to the border region — particularly from the Texas Department of Public Safety and Texas National Guard — to try and plug the gaps left by Biden’s lax enforcement.
