Kamala Harris hasn’t been forthright with the American people about what’s really driving the border crisis, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said Wednesday.
“She’s misleading America,” Abbott said of the vice president, according to Breitbart.
The Texas governor was joined by former President Donald Trump for a press briefing in the heavily-impacted Rio Grande Valley, where they ripped the Biden administration for its handling of a historic surge of migrants at the U.S.–Mexico border.
Governor: Harris is lying to America
According to local NBC affiliate KTSM, Abbott said that Harris is “missing the point” by focusing on the so-called “root causes” driving migrants to flee to America from poor countries in Central America.
“If she solves the problems in those three countries — which we know she can’t — that means there are still 147 other countries to go to solve problems there. They’re missing the point,” he said.
The governor viewed a section of border wall with Trump in a rebuke of Harris, whose trip to El Paso days before was slammed by Trump as a desperate about-face brought on by his own border visit. Harris had previously called the idea of touring the border a “grand gesture” while visiting Latin America, as Fox News reported.
The location of Wednesday’s briefing also seemed to underscore the crisis, as the Rio Grande has had heavier traffic in illegal immigration than any other sector, and some questioned Harris’ decision to visit El Paso as an attempt to downplay the severity of the crisis.
“The border has never been this way. We went from the best border we’ve ever had in the history of our country… It’s the best by far,” Trump said, according to ValleyCentral.com.
Abbott takes some criticism, too
For months, Gov. Abbott has castigated the Biden administration for failing to enforce federal immigration laws while seeking to show that Texas is doing what’s necessary to keep border residents safe.
He recently announced plans to build a border wall. Still, some say it hasn’t been enough.
Texas agricultural commissioner Sid Miller joined Tucker Carlson Tonight this week to sound off on Abbott for failing to be more aggressive, saying Biden’s plans to open the border were obvious and Abbott should have acted sooner.
“We knew that it was going to be open borders and the welcome mat was going to be out,” he said, according to Fox News. “Six months ago, that’s when we should’ve been doing something down on the border,” Miller added.
