A famed Hollywood character actor who excelled in bit-part roles, Mike Hagerty, reportedly died last week from an unknown cause at the age of 67, Deadline reported.
Hagerty was perhaps best known for his portrayal of building superintendent Mr. Treeger on the “Friends” sitcom, but he had most recently starred in HBO’s comedy series “Somebody Somewhere.”
Death revealed by current co-star
It was Hagerty’s co-star on that HBO series, Bridgett Everett, who shared the sad news in an Instagram post on Friday, in which she wrote, “With great sadness, the family of Michael G. Hagerty announced his death yesterday in Los Angeles.”
“A beloved character actor, his love of his hometown of Chicago and his family were the cornerstones of his life,” she added. “Mike, a devoted husband, is survived by his wife Mary Kathryn, his sister Mary Ann Hagerty, her wife Kathleen O’Rourke, and their daughter Meg. He will be sorely missed.”
In a separate post to Instagram, Everett wrote, “I loved Mike the instant i met him. He was so special. Warm, funny, never met a stranger. We are devastated he has passed. Mike was adored by the entire cast and crew of Somebody Somewhere. Our thoughts are with his wife and family.
Dozens of appearances in movies and TV shows
According to Deadline, Hagerty was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1954 and really got his acting career going in the mid-1980s and beyond with bit parts in dozens of films and TV shows, occasionally landing a recurring role in TV series in the 1990s like “The Building,” “The George Carlin Show,” and “Friends.”
In fact, Hagerty’s IMDb page noted that the actor had 114 credited appearances to his name, including in hits like “Seinfeld,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” among many others.
He also appeared in dozens of hit movies, though, again, typically as a bit-part role and rarely as a main or secondary supporting character.
Hagerty in particular seemed to be a featured favorite of “Saturday Night Live” actor Mike Myers, as he appeared in several movies starring Myers, such as “Wayne’s World,” “So I Married An Axe Murderer,” and “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.”
HBO mourns the loss of a “special talent”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hagerty’s death was further confirmed by his agent, August Kammar, as well as in a statement released by HBO.
“We are very saddened to hear about the sudden passing of Mike Hagerty,” the premium network said. “A member of the HBO family for many years, his most recent role as Bridget Everett’s father in Somebody Somewhere showed his special talent for bringing heart to a performance.”
“Mike was a joy to work with and brought warmth and kindness to all who knew him. We send our deepest condolences to his family and friends,” the statement added.
