Bloomberg News reports that Robert LuPone, the actor known for A Chorus Line and The Sopranos, has died at the age of 76.
LuPone, in fact, is the seventh Sopranos cast member to die recently.
The others are Tony Sirico, Bruce MacVittie, Paul Herman, Peter Bogdanovich, Ned Eisenberg, and Ray Liotta. They were mostly in their 60s and 70s, and their causes of death varied quite a bit. But, it’s still strange whenever one sees something like this happen.
LuPone is said to have passed on Saturday morning following a three-year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Who was he?
As a performer, LuPone was known for his acting and dancing. From Brooklyn, New York, his career began all the way back in the 1960s, on Broadway, although, his passion for the arts began much earlier.
A student of Julliard, Lupone made his first Broadway appearance in The Pajama Game, which featured Liz Minelli. He would go on to appear in numerous other Broadway plays, including in A Chorus Line, as Zach, which would earn him a Tony nomination for best-featured action.
Outside of Broadway, LuPone made a number of television appearances. These appearances included in Sex and the City, Guiding Light, All My Children, and many more. On The Sopranos, LuPone played Dr. Bruch Cusamano, the neighbor whom Tony Soprano called “Cooze.”
LuPone, however, was much more than just an actor. He also worked as an arts educator and he was the founding co-artistic director of the non-Broadway MCC Theater. The company has produced such shows as Frozen and Wit.
MCC posted a tribute to LuPone following the news of his passing.
“The MCC Theater community mourns the loss of our much loved and uniquely inspiring partner, colleague, and dear friend, Bob LuPone, who lived fearlessly and with great curiosity, good humor, a boundless passion for connection, and a whole lot of heart,” the statement reads. “We will miss him deeply and always.”
LuPone is survived by his wife, Virginia; his son, Orlando; his sister, Patti; and his brother, William.
Patti LuPone, Robert’s younger sister, is the well-known Broadway star.
