Actress Charlbi Dean dead at 32

Hollywood fans were saddened this week to learn that 32-year-old South African model and actress Charlbi Dean died this week.

According to the website Deadline, Dean unexpectedly passed away in New York City on Monday due to a sudden illness.

From child model to film and television actress

Born Charlbi Dean Kriek in Cape Town, South Africa, Deadline noted that the performer first found success as a child model at age six and then went on to pursue an acting career.

Dean appeared in 2010’s “Spud,” a comedy film that centered on students attending a South African boarding school.

Roles followed that performance included “Death Race 3: Inferno” (2013), “Blood in the Water” (2016), “Don’t Sleep” (2017), and “Porthole” (2018).

Earlier this year, Dean played the role of fashion model Yaya in the award-winning “Triangle of Sadness,” which also starred Woody Harrelson.

In addition to her film work, Dean was also known for having a recurring role on the CW’s superhero drama “Black Lightning” as the villainous assassin Syonide.

Dean said to have been “on the verge of a breakthrough”

News of Dean’s passing was greeted with sadness from many on social media, including film reviewer Robert Daniels. He suggested the actress was “on the verge of a breakthrough” before her untimely demise.

Also saddened was fellow film critic Guy Lodge, who said Dean’s death came as “a massive shock.” Lodge praised her wittiness and “clockwork-precise” work.
