Adam Schiff accused of violating federal law and ethics rules

Fox News reports that U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) - the congressman known for vigorously pushing the Russia-Trump Collusion Hoax - is now being accused of violating both federal law and the ethics rules of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The accusations come from the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT), which has just sent the complaint to the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE).

The complaint has to do with Schiff's recent announcement that he is running for a seat in the U.S. Senate.

Background

On Thursday, Schiff announced that he will be joining a crowded field of candidates who, in 2024, will be looking to win the U.S. Senate seat that is currently held by U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA).

Schiff made the announcement in a campaign video that he shared on his Twitter account. And, this video is at the center of FACT's complaint against Schiff.

Schiff, in the video, said:

Today's Republican Party is gutting the middle class, threatening our democracy. They aren't going to stop. We have to stop them. That's why I'm running for the U.S. Senate. The struggle isn't over. Not for me, not for you, not for our country.

The complaint, though, is not about what Schiff said in the video. It is about what he did in the video.

Russia, Russia, Russia!

What Schiff did in his campaign video was revert back to his Russia, Russia, Russia! propaganda.

He did so by including in the campaign video footage from former President Donald Trump's initial impeachment in 2019. Schiff, the reader may remember, was the lead prosecutor in that impeachment.

Now, it appears that Schiff is still trying to, once again, capitalize on the Russia-Trump collusion hoax politically by including it in his Senate campaign ad. The only problem is that, in doing so, he may have violated federal law.

The complaint

In its complaint, FACT accuses Schiff of improperly using "official resources for political purposes."

FACT writes:

In the present case, Rep. Schiff is clearly using official government video for campaign purposes in violation of federal law and the House ethics rules. The Office of Congressional Ethics is responsible for ensuring each Representative fulfills the public trust inherent in the office and that they comply with the House’s ethical standards. Therefore, we urge the Board to immediately investigate whether Representative Schiff used official resources for campaign purposes in violation of the House ethics rules.

It remains to be seen with the OCE will investigate the matter.

Schiff has not responded to the allegation, and the campaign video remains up.
