Anti-Trump Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s (R-AK) days in the U.S. Senate could be numbered.
Breitbart reports that Kelly Tshibaka, a Republican who is challenging Murkowski, just got another key endorsement, this time from the Alaska Republican Party.
“Grateful and thrilled”
Tshibaka announced that she received the Alaska Republican Party’s endorsement in a statement that she released on Saturday. The Alaska GOP’s vote was 58 to 17 in favor of Tshibaka.
“I am grateful and thrilled to have the strong support of the Alaska Republican Party, which voted overwhelmingly to endorse my candidacy for the U.S. Senate,” she said.
Tshibaka went on to express the need for a “united front” of Alaska Republicans who will “defend Alaska from the continued onslaught of the radical Biden administration.” Then, Tshibaka took a shot at Murkowski.
“We need a senator who will stand with Alaskans and not cozy up to the Washington, D.C. insiders, a senator who has earned the trust of the people and strives to keep it every day,” Tshibaka said.
Murkowski’s waning popularity
Polls indicate that Murkowski’s popularity has recently been fading.
Change Research, for example, found in June that only 26 percent of Alaskans had a favorable opinion of Murkowski, while 59 percent said that they have an “unfavorable” opinion of Murkowski and 15 percent said their opinion of Murkowski is “neutral” or that they “never heard of” her.
The numbers are much worse when party affiliation is factored in. A whopping 84 percent of Alaskans said that they have an unfavorable opinion of Murkowski; only 6 percent chose “favorable.” Murkowski, however, is doing okay with Alaska’s Democrats. 48 percent find her “favorable.”
And, therein lies the problem. Murkowski’s popularity among Republicans has been going down ever since she when full anti-Trump, by choosing not to endorse him in 2020 and by choosing to convict him during the most recent impeachment trial.
Tshibaka has Trump’s approval, as well
The Alaska Republican Party is the second major endorsement that Tshibaka has received. The first came from former President Donald Trump.
We’ll have to see if these two endorsements are enough to propel her to victory. We won’t have to wait too long as Murkowski’s is one of those Senate seats that will be up for grabs in 2022.
