Alleged members of Antifa assault GOP rallygoers in Portland, police response delayed

A Saturday GOP campaign event near police headquarters in downtown Portland was marred by attacks from alleged Antifa members, who threw smoke grenades, paint-filled balloons and fireworks, injuring two rallygoers while shortstaffed police struggled to respond.

The attack cut the event for Republican gubernatorial candidate Stan Pulliam, who favors re-funding police, short. Police responded 20 minutes after the attack started, but by then the Antifa members were gone.

“This is what happens when a Republican dares to hold an event in Portland to talk about funding our police. Antifa shows up,” Pulliam tweeted along with footage of the incident.

“Underfunded police” couldn’t respond in time

The “underfunded police didn’t show in time to allow our free speech,” he added.

Pulliam couldn’t have proven his point better if he had hired Antifa or some such thugs to sabotage his event.

What he experienced is what “neighbors throughout the Portland community have to experience on almost a daily basis,” he said to reporters after the attack.

“We called the police, we called 911,” he said, noting that some were on hold for over 20 minutes even though they were right outside their headquarters.

A drastic reduction

Portland used to have 30 officers per 100,000 population, Pulliam said. It now has only eight. “And then we wonder why we have all the violence and destruction happening on our streets,” he opined.

Portland Police said in a separate statement that a 12-hour span from Friday night into Saturday had been especially challenging for them. ‘

Five shootings, three serious crashes and one stolen ambulance took place during the time specified, police said. Some who call 911 when staff are otherwise occupied can wait on hold for hours.

The current mayor of Sandy, Pulliam has already proven he can get elected locally, and wants to seize on a moment that may be better for Republicans than any in recent years.
