Democrats are pointing to recent mass shootings as justification for new gun laws. However, a recent tragedy in New York illustrates how their soft-on-crime policies are enabling violence.
According to the New York Post, a man who is suspected of randomly shooting a subway passenger late last month was free on a $1 bail when the killing was committed.
19 prior arrests
The paper reported that 25-year-old Andrew Abdullah was charged with second-degree murder along with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon following the death of Daniel Enriquez.
Abdullah reportedly handed his 9mm handgun to a homeless man following the shooting, who is said to have then traded it for drugs.
The Post noted that Abdullah had 19 prior arrests and was taken into custody in April following a police chase in a stolen vehicle. Although prosecutors had asked for him to be held on $15,000 bail, that demand was rebuffed.
Mayor Adams responds
New York City Mayor Eric Adams condemned the decision to release Abdullah when speaking at a press briefing, calling “yet another failure” of New York’s criminal justice system.
“And now Daniel Enriquez is gone,” Adams continued, adding, “His family and loved ones are suffering and they rightfully want to know why.”
Enriquez’s sister told Fox News during an appearance on “America’s Newsroom” how she is “pleading that this not happen to another New Yorker, that it does not happen to another family.”
“I don’t want my brother just to be a passing name in the media, a passing name in our normalcy, post-pandemic,” the woman stressed. “If you take the pulse of the city, everyone is afraid.”
Enriquez’s killing came just over a month after 62-year-old Frank R. James allegedly opened fire with a handgun on a group of New York City subway passengers. Ten people sustained gunshot wounds and another 19 were otherwise injured.
Fox News’ Tucker Carlson detailed how James is a Black supremacist who has a long history of preaching hate against whites, Asians, and Latinos.
“In one video he posted to YouTube, James declares that, ‘White people and Black people, as we call ourselves, should not have any contact with each other. Blacks and Whites, so-called should not even be in the same hemisphere.'”
