Conservatives got some bad news on the weekend when reports revealed that former Florida Congressman Allen West had been hospitalized after being injured in a motorcycle accident, as the Daily Caller reported.
West had reportedly just attended the Texas Freedom Rally in Austin.
West injured in accident
The retired Army lieutenant colonel is married to Angela Graham West, and she announced what happened to her husband via Facebook.
“Please pray for Allen West,” she wrote on Friday. “He is in Emergency and his motorcycle has been hit outside of WACO. On my way to hospital now.”
According to the Daily Caller, messages were subsequently posted to West’s Twitter account by members of his team. One read, “According to law enforcement on the scene, a car cut LTC West off, resulting in two motorcycles colliding, one of which was his.”
“He was transported by helicopter to the hospital, where he is currently in stable condition and undergoing assessment,” the message continued.
“Family and members of Team West are at the hospital, and we will continue to provide updates,” West’s representatives later stated, adding that they “appreciate the support and kind notes and solicit your continued prayers.”
Soldier turned congressman
According to his congressional biography, West was born in 1961 in Atlanta Georgia, and his father was a veteran of World War II. West joined the Army after graduating from college in 1983 and went on to serve in the military for more than two decades.
In 2008, West secured the Republican nomination in a south Florida House district, but he was defeated in the general election to incumbent Democrat Ron Klein. He made a second attempt at unseating Klein in 2010 and ultimately succeeded, going to Washington as part of that year’s wave of Tea Party-affiliated newcomers.
West was defeated in a 2012 re-election bid by Democrat Patrick Murphy after his district’s boundaries were redrawn. While he initially took legal action following the discovery of voting irregularities, West ultimately admitted defeat two weeks later, according to The Washington Post.
The Houston Chronicle reported that as a result of the crash, West suffered a concussion, multiple broken bones, and lacerations, but is expected to recover fully.
West himself issued a statement over the weekend, saying that he was “alive by the grace of God,” according to The Dallas Morning News.
