Fox News national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin lashed out at President Joe Biden over his Aug. 31 deadline to remove Americans and Afghan allies from Afghanistan and the trauma effect it’s likely having on U.S. military troops, Fox News reports.
“The people who are suffering are the Afghans who are being left behind, the women and the children who won’t be able to go to school, and those poor American troops who are doing the best they can right now, being given an impossible task,” Griffin said on The Five Tuesday.
“I can’t even imagine the trauma that they are experiencing right now and that they will be suffering from when they get home,” Griffin added.
“And there’s the veterans back home who feel so awful, who are getting WhatsApp messages and e-mails from their translators who sacrificed their lives for more than a decade, many of whom, thousands of whom, we have not gotten out. We did not keep our promise and it is a national shame,” Griffin continued.
The frustration has grown as Biden has all but refused to extend the Aug. 31 self-imposed pullout deadline — a deadline that the Taliban have reinforced with threats.
“Pentagon says number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan will go to ‘zero’ at Aug. 31 deadline. Unclear who will protect last Americans leaving,” Fox News Pentagon correspondent Lucas Tomlinson tweeted.
“‘There’s no question,’ Taliban will help complete evacuation, Kirby says. Months ago, plan was to keep 650 U.S. troops at U.S. Embassy Kabul,” he added.
Lawmakers push back
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) blasted the Biden administration following a briefing on the devolving situation this week.
“Just left a classified briefing on the Afghanistan crisis, and here’s what I can tell you: The Biden admin does not have an accurate count of Americans stranded in the country—or a plan to get them out,” McCarthy tweeted.
Missouri Republican Rep. Vicky Hartzler called the decision “disgraceful.”
“Joe Biden’s botched withdrawal stranded Americans in Afghanistan. After August 31, he’ll officially abandon them. Disgraceful,” she tweeted.
As the Aug. 31 deadline approaches, Biden will undoubtedly face increased scrutiny over his terrible planning to remove Americans from Afghanistan. Some, including Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), have called for Biden to face impeachment over the foreign policy debacle.
