“The Andy Griffith Show” star Maggie Peterson, known for playing Charlene Darling, passed away from natural causes on Sunday at the age of 81.
Peterson’s death comes just months after the passing of her long-time husband in December.

“Maggie wanted this community to know how much you meant to her over the past three years,” Ben Eaton, Peterson’s nephew, wrote Monday on GoFundMe.
“Despite being in Las Vegas and away from her family, your love and devotion helped her to not feel alone. She made many mentions to us about how she couldn’t believe how generous you all were. You truly made a positive impact on her life and helped her during some very difficult times,” the account added.

“A familiar face to the Griffith fans, Peterson also guest-starred in spin-offs Gomer Pyle, USMC and Mayberry, R.F.D., and she reprised her role as Charlene Darling in the 1986 TV reunion film Return To Mayberry,” Forbes reported.

“In 1969, she appeared alongside Griffith on the big screen in Angel in My Pocket,” the report added.
The Andy Griffith Museum also posted a tribute to Peterson on its Facebook page.
“It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Maggie Peterson Mancuso. Maggie will forever be remembered by Mayberry Fans as Charlene Darling on ‘The Andy Griffith Show.’ She brought so much joy to her fans, and to our Mayberry Days Festival. We will miss you Maggie,” the post noted.
Peterson will be long remembered by all who grew up watching the classic show that has touched the lives of many.
