In a move that some say is the result of political pressure, chief White House medical advisor Anthony Fauci announced this week that America’s COVID pandemic is over.
That declaration didn’t go over well with many on the left, however, and now some of Fauci’s allies seem ready to turn on him.
Fauci: “We are at a low level right now”
Fauci’s controversial statement was made on Tuesday during an interview with PBS News Hour host Judy Woodruff. At one point Woodruff asked, “How close are we to the end of this pandemic?”
“We are certainly right now in this country out of the pandemic phase,” the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director replied.
“Namely, we don’t have 900,000 new infections a day and tens and tens and tens of thousands of hospitalizations and thousands of deaths,” he continued, stressing, “We are at a low level right now.”
“So, if you’re saying, are we out of the pandemic phase in this country, we are,” Fauci added, saying, “we’re not going to eradicate this virus.”
“If we can keep that level very low, and intermittently vaccinate people — and I don’t know how often that would have to be, Judy,” he concluded.
Critics push back on Fauci’s claim
In a subsequent piece, Not the Bee contributor Jesse James speculated that Fauci’s words were designed to make the Biden administration appear more effective at dealing with COVID, and likely came as a result of political pressure.
“Folks, you know and I know that Biden and Harris absolutely went to town on Fauci in order to make him go on live television and utter those words,” James wrote.
He also pointed out that Fauci immediately received some serious backlash online, with Dr. Oni Blackstock tweeting, “How is this possible that were ‘out of the pandemic phase?”
“We are at the same level of cases nationally as we were last July and that is likely an extreme underestimate given the prevalence of at-home testing,” Blackstock pointed out, complaining, “The goalposts keep shifting.”
Harvard professor Louise Ivers spoke up as well. She said “the idea that US is ‘out of the pandemic phase’ is not a concept I agree with.”
