Anti-Trump GOP Rep. Kinzinger could run for president in 2024

Anti-Trump Illinois Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger has not ruled out a potential 2024 bide for president in 2024, according to an interview with CNN on Thursday.

“Rep. Adam Kinzinger told CNN he is considering at least a statewide run if not a presidential one, and that he’ll ‘probably’ make his decision on whether to launch a bid for governor or senator by January,” CNN reported.

The Challenge

“It would be very hard. If you’re a Republican here in our state, it’s not easy unless you embrace Trump. So that’s question number one,” Illinois Democratic Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi told CNN.

“And question number two is, do you embrace a lot of the policies that are popular in Illinois?” he added.

The state’s governor is up for reelection in 2022, as is the Senate seat for Sen. Tammy Duckworth, both Democrats.

But Kinzinger didn’t rule out a run for the White House. If he did run, he would likely run against a comeback bid by former President Donald Trump, making the run an unlikely success.

The Reality

Kinzinger was one of 10 House Republicans to vote to impeach Trump after Jan. 6. So far, he’s also the second of the 10 to announce plans not to run for office in 2022.

In addition, Trump has already made known his plans to target those who voted to impeach him in the 2022 primaries. Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, for example, faces a Trump-endorsed challenger in what could end her time in the House.

Kinzinger has become highly unpopular among conservatives, making his a longshort for any national office. Even in Illinois, where the governor is Democrat, he could do better running for Democrats than as a Republican.

The Illinois Rep. could take a run for Senate, but even then he’s less likely to win than Duckworth. The talk seems to be ramping up for a battle that has little chance of victory, much like O’Rourke trying to take on the role of governor of Texas.

The story may make for a good headline, but Kinzinger more likely has a Senate seat in mind as he makes plans for his next steps in his political career.
