AOC blames US embargo for unrest in Cuba

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) made headlines when she weighed in on the turmoil in Cuba Thursday, pointing the finger at the United States for its embargo on Cuba according to Breitbart News

The New York Democrat called the United States’ actions “Trump-era restrictions” saying that she believed the embargo on the socialist state was what was driving the unrest.

In addition to condemning what she called “anti-democratic actions” by President Diaz-Canel she went on to turn her ire toward the United States:

“We also must name the U.S. contribution to Cuban suffering: our sixty-year-old embargo. Last month, once again, the U.N. voted overwhelmingly to call on the United States to lift its embargo on Cuba,” the congresswoman said in her statement.

“The embargo is absurdly cruel and, like too many other U.S. policies targeting Latin Americans, the cruelty is the point,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

The outspoken congresswoman calls herself a “socialist-democrat,” which translates to many of her beliefs overlapping with that of the traditional socialist, and some with traditional communists.

Included in that ideology is the inter-nation responsibility that the congresswoman advocates for, asking Americans to make changes that go directly against policies that have successfully kept the nation safe for hundreds of years.

“I outright reject the Biden administration’s defense of the embargo,” Ocasio-Cortez went on. “It is never acceptable for us to use cruelty as a point of leverage against every day people.”

The 31-year-old congresswoman did not, however, address the policies that she holds that the Cuban people are protesting against in the Island nation.

Her formal statement is similar to the one that Black Lives Matter (BLM) released on Thursday which called out the “cruel and inhumane” practices of the United States.

Frustration on the part of United States progressives is in stark juxtaposition to the Cuban people themselves who have used America and the American flag as the banner for their uprising, asking the Cuban government to model its practices after the freedom the United States is known for.

Conservatives are left questioning whether Ocasio-Cortez and others are truly speaking for the Cuban people or just using the conflict to once again push their own agenda at the expense of those fighting for their lives against the same agenda the congresswoman promotes.
