AOC denounces ‘revolving door of private industry’ represented by Biden staff picks

Democrats across the nation might have taken to the streets last month in celebration of Joe Biden’s apparent victory over President Donald Trump — but it seems the party is already showing signs of fracture.

According to Breitbart, high-profile progressive U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) recently lodged some pointed criticism at Biden over the people he’s chosen to work in his administration.

“A huge reason we got Donald Trump”

The congresswoman’s remarks reportedly came during a recent podcast appearance with The Intercept’s Jeremy Scahill.

Specifically, Ocasio-Cortez took issue with the “revolving door” of D.C. insiders who are poised to take on key positions in a prospective Biden cabinet and elsewhere, Breitbart noted.

She went on to call some of Biden’s announced staffing picks “horrible,” pointing out the prevalence of long-term Democratic Party fixtures among the former vice president’s nominees.

The New York congresswoman said that many of the names being floated have occupied powerful positions “for the last 10, 20, 30 years,” representing “not just a revolving door of private industry,” but one of political cronyism.

As far as AOC is concerned, her party’s reliance on elite, well-connected figures is “a huge reason we got Donald Trump in the first place.”

“This moneyed, political establishment”

Ocasio-Cortez also asserted in her talk with The Intercept that many Americans have developed “an extreme disdain for this moneyed, political establishment that just rules Washington, D.C., no matter who you seem to elect.”

Taking aim at the mainstream Democratic Party’s approach to foreign affairs, she voiced certain criticisms that sound eerily similar to those made by the president and his allies.

“And you know especially when it comes to foreign policy, we’re really in an appalling state,” she said, singling out “this continued commitment to foreign wars that frankly people all across the political spectrum in the United States are sick of.”

Her broader point has been reflected by other pundits and reporters, including in a recent Politico piece on the Biden transition’s agency review team members.

“Two are Goldman Sach [sic] veterans,” the article began. “Others have worked for consulting firms like McKinsey & Co. and Boston Consulting Group along with one Google and three Facebook employees. One is the daughter of a pair of longtime Biden advisers.”
