Biden’s approval rating continues to drop, hits 39% in new poll

Various factors have contributed to President Joe Biden’s decreasing popularity in recent weeks — and one new poll reveals the alarming rate at which Americans are losing faith in his administration.

According to an Economist/YouGov poll released on Wednesday, the president’s approval rating has hit a record low of just 39% compared to 49% who disapprove. According to Breitbart, support among independents matched the overall 39% rating.

Biden underwater on COVID, economy

The survey breaks down the issues about which respondents expressed the most concern, such as the economy, COVID-19, and his handling of the U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.

For the first time since taking office, more people expressed disapproval of Biden’s COVID-19 performance than approved of it, by a margin of 45% to 42%, Breitbart reported.

Perhaps in an attempt to reverse that downward trend, Biden is set to deliver a speech on Thursday in which he will announce new COVID-19 restrictions, particularly on unvaccinated Americans. Meanwhile, hospitalizations due to the virus have begun a slow decline leading to some hope that the highly transmissible delta variant is starting to subside.

As for the economy, about 4 in 10 respondents said they approve of Biden’s policies while 46% said they disapprove. Pollsters found that just 16% of participants believe the economy is improving, compared to 44% who think it is not.

Inflation is near the top of the list in terms of economic concerns, and 45% of respondents blame rising prices on Biden. Just over 1 in 4 said they believe former President Donald Trump is responsible.

“We can’t do anything”

Amid widespread criticism for Biden’s Afghanistan pullout ahead of a Taliban takeover and chaotic evacuation effort, more Americans are expressing disapproval on that front as well.

Just 1 in 3 of those polled approve of Biden’s Afghanistan policy. More than half — 55% to be exact — disapprove, including 25% of Democrats.

After nearly eight months in office, it appears that the president’s honeymoon period is effectively over and many Americans are frustrated with the direction he is taking the country.

Even Democratic political strategists are beginning to speak out openly against the administration, as reported by Politico.

“When Biden was elected, it was supposed to be, ‘Oh, the adults are back in the room to take charge,'” one partisan operative said. “It turns out, we can’t do anything. Any Democratic strategist who thinks this is not going to impact the midterms or impact Biden being reelected, clearly they don’t know what the f*** they’re talking about.”
