It has been apparent to many Americans for months that President Joe Biden’s abrupt reversal of most of his predecessor’s successful policies on border security and immigration are indefensible and a primary cause of the current chaotic influx of migrants.
A senior member of Biden’s administration, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, has admitted as much in leaked audio of remarks he delivered to Border Patrol agents in Texas, Fox News reported.
In the audio obtained by Fox via an unidentified source within the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency, the head of DHS acknowledged that the current situation at the southern U.S. border is “unsustainable” and that “we’re going to lose” all control if the “first line of defense” at the border is not maintained.
“We can’t continue like this”
In a private meeting with Border Patrol agents on Thursday that was surreptitiously recorded, Mayorkas said, “A couple of days ago I was down in Mexico, and I said look, you know, if, if our borders are the first line of defense, we’re going to lose and this is unsustainable.”
“We can’t continue like this, our people in the field can’t continue, and our system isn’t built for it,” the DHS head admitted.
He further acknowledged that he is “very well” aware that the border situation, particularly in that sector in Texas, is near its “breaking” point, adding, “It’s our responsibility to make sure that that never happens again.”
Fox further reported that Sec. Mayorkas received critical pushback from some of the Border Patrol agents in that meeting and had responded by highlighting various efforts he’s pursuing to ease their situation, such as getting them hazard pay and additional manpower, as well as enacting stronger enforcement measures against lawbreakers and deportees, and keeping in place the Title 42 public health order, which allows for immediate expulsions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
GOP lawmakers respond
The New York Post reported that the leaked audio of Mayorkas came on the same day that the secretary had stated during a press conference that more than 212,000 illegal border crossers were stopped in the month of July, a 20-year high for that month, and a more than 12% increase of June’s numbers.
The stunning admission, which completely undercuts the positive spin on the border situation put forward publicly by the Biden administration, predictably prompted swift rebuttals from prominent Republican critics. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) tweeted, “Glad Secretary Mayorkas agrees — the situation at the border is ‘unsustainable’. Now what is their plan to fix it?”
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) wrote on Twitter, “These are the most honest words I’ve heard from the mouth of Secretary Mayorkas. Joe Biden has totally lost control of the border.”
More to the point, a tweet from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) stated that Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were the “root cause” of the current “open borders” crisis, in that it had been created by their own policies of restoring “catch and release” for apprehended border crossers, had “halted construction of the border wall,” and had ended Trump’s successful “Remain in Mexico” policy for asylum-seekers.
