AZ GOP chairwoman pushed to resign after election audit

Arizona Republicans are calling for GOP Chairwoman Kelli Ward to resign following the release of the state’s Senate election audit report.

According to The Washington Examiner, the Arizona Republican is closely affiliated with former President Donald Trump and was a key part in promoting the election audit.

“She has caused a fracture in our party. She has operated outside of it for the purpose of helping herself,” Supervisor Clint Hickman of Ward said in an interview with KTAR News on Friday.

Hickman has been pushing top Republicans in the state, including Gov. Doug Ducey, Attorney General Mark Brnovich, and state Treasurer Kimberly Yee, to support his cause for Ward’s resignation.

The GOP Chairwoman championed the cause of getting an election audit, gathering an army of supporters and finally getting her audit of Maricopa County’s 2.1 million ballots.

Her cause didn’t come without a cost, however. In order to obtain her goal she found herself critical of the county’s board, a group that is controlled by Republicans:

“I think we’re going to get pretty crappy results from whatever they do,” Ward said in January when asked about an election audit that the county approved itself.

Hickman pointed to that infraction as proof that the GOP leader wasn’t working with the GOP, saying the board has “always tried” when it comes to election integrity and working with the legislature:

” … this county has always tried to work with the legislative branch and the judicial branch to bring out evidence and fact,” Hickman said in his diatribe against Ward.

He added that those in the Senate who supported Ward’s effort “decided to act on conjecture, apparently.”

Hickman is not a lone voice of dissent against Ward as others have joined in to voice their frustrations. Among them is Supervisor Bill Gates, another Republican, who said that the party “must choose a new direction rooted in truth & good politics.”

“I stand w/ my colleague here calling for @kelliwardaz’s resignation,” Gates wrote in a tweet. “The @AZGOP’s done nothing but push lies about our electoral system, ignore down ballot races, & lose federal & state elections under her leadership.”

Biden reportedly took Arizona by 10,457 votes statewide and by 45,109 votes in Maricopa County in 2020.
