Many American cities have a problem with far-left progressive district attorneys backed by leftist billionaire George Soros who flout the rule of law and instead impose soft-on-criminals “social justice reform” policies that, of course, result in emboldened criminals, higher crime rates, and more innocent victims.
Voters in Baltimore, Maryland appear to have had enough of that, as Soros-backed Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby (D) was defeated in last week’s state Democratic primary election, Legal Insurrection reported.
Mosby first gained national notoriety in 2015 after she sided with violent and destructive rioters in Baltimore and maliciously attempted to prosecute white police officers over the death in custody of black suspect Freddie Gray, but more recently has garnered more negative attention over federal indictments for corruption and fraud.
Defeated in the Democratic primary
The Associated Press reported Friday that the results in last Tuesday’s Democratic primary contest for Baltimore’s state’s attorney position had finally been announced and revealed that Mosby had lost the race to defense attorney Ivan Bates.
Bates had previously served as a prosecutor in Baltimore from 1996-2002 before launching his own private practice as a defense attorney, and he ran on his past experience as a prosecutor in relation to his message that the city needed new leadership and, per the AP, “ethical, transparent and effective prosecution.”
“Today, Baltimore decided it was time for a change,” Bates said in a statement on social media. “An enormous thank you to all of my supporters. I recognize that the job of helping build a safer Baltimore is a tremendous challenge. I am ready to lead — and to work with collaborators of all stripes to help make that a reality.”
Alleged pandemic relief and mortgage fraud
Legal Insurrection noted that it was unclear exactly why Baltimore voters chose to reject Mosby in favor of Bates, as there were multiple possibilities — Mosby’s racially motivated lax prosecution of local crime and anti-police attitude or her own alleged criminal behavior over the past two years.
According to Fox News, Mosby was hit with federal indictments in January related to allegations of mortgage fraud and perjury that stemmed from her fraudulent use of pandemic relief policies to help finance the purchase of vacation rental properties in Florida.
Mosby, who never missed a paycheck throughout the pandemic, nevertheless is alleged to have committed perjury when she cited coronavirus hardship in order to make two premature withdrawals from her city retirement account that equaled roughly $90,000, with those funds being used to make down payments on two separate properties in Florida.
She is also alleged to have lied more than once on the mortgage applications, first by failing to disclose unpaid federal taxes and an IRS lien against her, as well as by falsely claiming one of those properties would be a “second home” in order to obtain a lower rate when, prosecutors claim, Mosby had already arranged for the property to be a rental under the control of a vacation property management company.
Could face a maximum of 70 years in federal prison
Fox News noted that, if convicted, Mosby could face up to five years in prison for each of two perjury charges as well as up to 30 years in prison for each of two mortgage fraud charges.
Mosby, of course, has proclaimed her innocence and asserted through her attorney that the “bogus” federal charges were “rooted in personal, political and racial animus” against her.
