To hear Democrats and the media tell it, Russia poses the greatest threat to the United States, but those with their eyes open to reality understand that it is actually China that poses a far greater and more expansive threat to American dominance, particularly in terms of the economy and technology.
Attorney General Bill Barr is one who understands this, and he issued a dire warning for America to take the China threat seriously when it comes to the next major technological breakthrough — 5G wireless infrastructure networks.
China poses real threat
In a speech Thursday for the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington D.C., Barr didn’t sugarcoat the threat.
Barr served as a top executive in the telecom industry for several years in between his two stints as attorney general. He tapped into that experience along with his years of study of China more generally to bolster his plea for the Western world to take seriously the Chinese Communist Party’s admitted aim to dominate the world in the very near future.
He noted that China’s primary goal is to supplant America as the dominant economic and technological force, and it has used its authoritarian dictatorship to “mobilize” all aspects of its nation and society to reach that goal.
“This drive is backed by industrial policy involving huge investments in key technologies, massive financing, and subsidies in the hundreds of billions of dollars,” Barr explained.
“Unfortunately, it also involves industrial espionage and theft of technology and intellectual property, as well as forced technology transfers, predatory pricing, leveraging China’s foreign direct investment, and strong-arm sales tactics in target markets, including the use of corruption.”
China’s dominance of 5G
When it comes to the developing 5G network, Barr warned against China’s “technological blitzkrieg.” “While they are orchestrating a centrally planned campaign to dominate key technologies, they are attempting to capture the benefit of our free society by the outright stealing of our technology,” he said.
China has already taken the lead in developing the “quantum leap” in 5G technology that will soon become integral to virtually every conceivable industry and aspect of life, Barr said. He also pointed out that China already dominates roughly 40% of the market via regime-backed companies like Huawei and ZTE.
Barr said the estimated economic benefit from opportunities presented by 5G ranges around $23 trillion, the overwhelming majority of which would be captured by China if their plans succeed.
He urged the Western world to rapidly come to grips with this fast-approaching reality and come together in a cooperative fashion to compete with China.
As Barr noted, time is running short and delays could prove seriously consequential, both in terms of the economy as well as with regard to capitalism and the freedoms we all hold dear.
