AG Barr knew about Hunter Biden investigation prior to election but kept it quiet: Reports

Former Vice President Joe Biden’s son Hunter confirmed this week that he is under federal investigation over what he characterized as his “tax affairs.”

While the scandal-plagued younger Biden’s trouble with the law was not altogether surprising to many of his critics, a revelation about Attorney General William Barr’s knowledge of the case likely left many Americans shocked.

“An insane act of corruption”

According to the Wall Street Journal, sources within the Department of Justice confirmed that Barr had been aware of “a disparate set of investigations involving Hunter Biden’s business and financial dealing since at least this spring” but opted to keep that information under wraps ahead of the election.

The Journal further noted that the Delaware-based investigation is not the only federal criminal probe Hunter Biden is facing.

Neither of the ongoing inquiries is believed to have any potential implications for his father, according to the Washington Examiner.

Nevertheless, conservative pundit Ben Shapiro complained on Thursday that the Justice Department had engaged in “election interference” by not acknowledging the probe.

“Typically, legal investigations do not get held up contingent on the person’s proximity to an election,” he said. “That’s insane — that’s an insane act of corruption.”

“That would be election interference”

Using the Trump administration as a hypothetical example, Shapiro said: “If Ivanka Trump had committed a crime and she were under investigation, and the feds said, ‘You know what? There’s an election coming up, we’re just going to put this thing off until just after the election,’ that would be election interference.”

He concluded that the “same is obviously true of Hunter Biden.”

In a statement on Wednesday, Hunter Biden confirmed that he was under investigation. “I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisors,” he said.

His father’s transition team also released a statement on the matter, saying, “President-elect Biden is deeply proud of his son, who has fought through difficult challenges, including the vicious personal attacks recent months, only to emerge stronger.”

Is “proud” really the right word to use here?
