The Washington Examiner reports that Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) confronted Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra this week about a memo that he released in which he advocated for teenage transgender surgeries.
The HHS memo is called “Gender Affirming Care and Young People.” It is a two-page document that was released by the agency earlier this month.
In the document, HHS writes:
Gender-affirming care is a supportive form of healthcare. It consists of an array of services that may include medical, surgical, mental health, and non-medical services for transgender and nonbinary people.
For transgender and nonbinary children and adolescents, early gender-affirming care is crucial to overall health and well-being as it allows the child or adolescent to focus on social transitions and can increase their confidence while navigating the healthcare system.
Later on, HHS lists a number of procedures that it approves of, including, among others, “top surgery to create male-typical chest shape or enhance breasts” and “bottom surgery on genitals or reproductive organs.”
In other words, the procedures approved by HHS for teenagers and children include mastectomies, hysterectomies, male genital removal, and the like.
On Wednesday, during the House Budget Committee hearing, Boebert confronted Becerra about this document.
“For the record, you favor HHS’s funding being [used for] sex reassignment surgeries on minors?” Boebert asked, to which Becerra replied, “Yes.”
Becerra continued by saying, “I will do everything I can to defend any American, including children, whether or not they fit the categories you have mentioned. And, if they talk about gender-affirming care, I am there to protect the rights of any American.”
Overall, Boebert, during her questioning of Becerra, was trying to get at whether American tax dollars are being used to fund transgender surgeries for children. But, Becerra never answered that question.
This is all part of the highly-controversial transgender agenda that Biden and the left are pushing. Advocates of this agenda maintain that it is needed for the health and well-being of transgender individuals, including children.
Opponents, however, argue that this agenda is doing more to hurt children than to help them.
