Far-left Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) might make another run at the U.S. presidency in 2024, the Washington Examiner reports.
The Examiner bases its report on a leaked memo that was written by Faiz Shakir, one of Sanders’s senior advisers.
The memo explicitly states that Sanders “has not ruled out another run for president.”
“In the event of an open 2024 Democratic presidential primary, Sen. Sanders has not ruled out another run for president, so we advise that you answer any questions about 2024 with that in mind,” the memo reads.
The memo also provides a suggestion for how to answer questions about whether Sanders would be willing to challenge President Joe Biden in 2024 for the Democratic nomination.
One suggested response reads:
Sen. Sanders is focused on helping Joe Biden have a successful presidency. As Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, no one fought harder for the president’s policy agenda than Bernie. He traveled to Republican Congressional Districts last summer to promote Build Back Better. Unfortunately, that legislation was stopped by corporate Democrats.
Mike Casca, a spokesman for Sanders, has addressed the leaking of the memo. In doing so, he implied that it is indeed authentic without explicitly saying so.
“While it’s frustrating this private memo leaked to the media, the central fact remains true, which is that Sen. Sanders is the most popular officeholder in the country,” Casca claimed.
According to Casca, the leaked memo itself was brought about by this unidentified poll.
The 80-year-old far-left Sen. Sanders has been desperately trying to get his hands on the U.S. presidency.
Sanders made a run at the White House in the last two presidential campaigns, both in 2016 and in 2020. In both instances he came up short, failing to get the Democratic nomination, which went to Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020.
One would think that with his age and his lack of success nationally Sanders might be finally giving up on his presidential ambitions. He suggested as much in May 2020, saying, the likelihood of another run at the U.S. presidency would be “very, very slim.” But this leaked memo shows that Sanders is still on the hunt.
