President Joe Biden has received steady criticism from conservatives over his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it seems that even some in his own party aren’t satisfied with his performance.
As The Hill reported, former Planned Parenthood head and Baltimore Health Commissioner Leana Wen said that the Biden administration made its “biggest mistake” this spring by loosening mask rules “too soon.”
Was it “too soon?”
Wen, according to Yahoo News, said this week that Biden “absolutely declared a victory too soon” after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced in May that fully vaccinated individuals could stop wearing masks indoors.
“The honor code did not work,” Wen insisted, complaining that “the unvaccinated began behaving like they were vaccinated” and also ditched the masks.
“Surges have happened because of unvaccinated individuals,” Wen continued. “Now with the Delta variant, restrictions are coming back, except nobody’s listening anymore.”
Wen reiterated her opinion on the situation in an op-ed published Thursday by the Washington Post, writing, “the problem is the unvaccinated.”
“The wrong explanation”
Wen also took issue with how the Biden administration has framed the latest CDC guidance calling for renewed masking in areas where transmission rates are “high” or “substantial.”
“The CDC is also trying to urge localities and businesses to reimplement indoor mask requirements given surging coronavirus infections,” she said. “That’s the right policy, but it’s using the wrong explanation.”
“The vaccinated are not a major source of spread,” Wen added. “Even if every vaccinated person puts on a mask, that’s not going to solve things when the vast majority of transmission is by the unvaccinated.”
Wen continued: “We need a return to indoor mask mandates not because the vaccinated are suddenly a problem, but because we don’t trust the unvaccinated to voluntarily do the right thing.”
“Sowing enormous confusion”
For his part, President Biden has dismissed claims that his administration’s approach has lead to uncertainty among the public and instead placed the blame on unvaccinated Americans, adding that they’re not as intelligent as he believed them to be.
According to Fox News, last week, Biden said that the unvaccinated are “sowing enormous confusion.” He added: “If you’re not vaccinated you’re not nearly as smart as I thought you were.”
