Biden admin confronted about president’s fossil fuel reversal

Fox News reports that Jared Bernstein, one of President Joe Biden’s top economic advisers, was confronted on Friday about Biden’s sudden fossil fuel reversal.

The comments from Bernstein came in the wake of increased criticism leveled at the Biden administration for letting the U.S. energy crisis spiral out of control.

A flashback

It was back on the 2020 campaign trail that then-candidate Biden promised to go to war with the oil industry.

Fox News highlights one exchange from the campaign, in particular, that stands out. It occurred when Biden was campaigning in New Castle, New Hampshire.

There, he told a woman, “Kiddo, I want you to just take a look at my eyes – I guarantee you we’re going to end fossil fuels and I’m not going to cooperate.”

Fast-forward to June 2022

Up until now, Biden has made good on his campaign promise. One of his first moves as president was to end the Keystone XL pipeline project, and, since then, he has continued this green energy push.

The problem, though, is that gas and oil prices are through the roof, the midterm elections are incoming, and Biden is getting hammered in the polls. It is likely for this reason that Biden, all of a sudden, changed his tune this week. In a recent exchange with reporters, Biden called upon the American oil industry to produce more oil and to cut back on what he called their “exorbitant profits.”

“You just base it on what a barrel of oil costs then actually it should not be this high … they’re making exorbitant profits,” Bidne said. “They could drill, but they’re not doing it. I think we’re going to be in a position where  – -”

At this point, Biden was cut off by First Lady Jill Biden. The two walked away.

What gives?

Bernstein made a recent appearance on the Fox News Channel’s The Story where he was asked why Biden suddenly reversed his position.

Berstein replied:

I think when it comes to policy, we’ve got to walk and chew gum at the same time. We have to make sure that these companies have the support they need right now. And frankly, the fact that they’re pumping more than they ever had before and they have so many leases available to them, suggests that they have the ability to pump more.

Translation: It’s an election year. Time to ride the fence.
