President Joe Biden’s administration is putting an end to a Trump-era policy imposing fines against illegal immigrants who fail to leave the U.S. when ordered to.
According to The Daily Wire, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has ordered Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to stop levying fines against undocumented migrants who overstay their welcomes, saying the practice runs “counter to the agency’s best interest.”
“Ineffective and unnecessary”
The decision was reportedly made by DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and officially announced on Friday, but fines have not been issued or enforced since Biden took office on Jan. 20.
“There is no indication that these penalties promoted compliance with noncitizens’ departure obligations,” Mayorkas said in a statement, according to The Daily Wire. “We can enforce our immigration laws without resorting to ineffective and unnecessary punitive measures.”
The secretary went on: “ICE intends to work with the Department of Treasury to cancel the existing debts of those who had been fined.”
Just when you think it can’t get worse…
Reacting to the decision Friday, Chad Wolf, who served as acting DHS secretary under then-President Donald Trump, suggested that the move is only the latest to come from Biden’s disastrous agenda on immigration.
“Just when you think the Biden administration’s immigration policies and agenda can’t get worse…it does,” he said in a tweet, according to The Daily Wire. “How does withdrawing a consequence (i.e. fine) and holding individuals accountable when they overstay their visa and fail to depart in the best interests of DHS?”

Voters reject Biden agenda
The results of a Heritage Foundation poll published earlier this month seemed to show that Americans are largely on Wolf’s side when it comes to Biden’s immigration agenda: the survey found that strong majorities of battleground state voters think the president should continue building the Trump-era wall at the U.S.–Mexico border, which Biden halted construction of on his first day in office, and that fraudulent asylum-seekers should be deported and not allowed to reapply.
A majority of those polled also said they believe Biden caused the current crisis at the border, which reached a peak in March, with more than 172,000 migrants crossing into the U.S. in a single month — the most in nearly two decades, according to ABC News.
“Americans are overwhelmingly rejecting Biden’s open-borders agenda,” Heritage Action Executive Director Jessica Anderson said after the latest numbers were released. “Voters in congressional battlegrounds and suburban areas are very concerned with the effects of illegal immigration on America’s social services, taxpayer burden, and public safety. These Americans know what the administration refuses to admit: our border is in crisis, and Biden’s weak policies are to blame.”
Indeed, it’s clear that Biden’s current strategy isn’t working. If the president continues on this path and allows millions of illegal immigrants to come into the country over the next three-and-a-half years, millions of voters might just decide come re-election time that they’ve had all they can take of his “open-borders” attitude.
