Biden admin finally ends another COVID travel restriction

The Biden administration is showing more signs that it is ready to move on from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fox News reports that President Joe Biden’s administration will soon end a key COVID-19 restriction for international air travelers.

This particular travel restriction was implemented by the Biden administration last year to stop the spread of COVID-19.

The Biden administration initially banned nonessential travel to the U.S. from such countries as China and Iran, but the administration moved away from this ban and replaced it with other restrictions.

These restrictions included a 24-hour coronavirus testing requirement for unvaccinated air travelers and a 72-hour testing requirement for fully vaccinated travelers. The restrictions also included a vaccination requirement for foreign, non-immigrant adults traveling to the U.S.

Towards the end of last year, during the spread of the Omicron variant, the Biden administration altered the testing requirement so that everyone, regardless of vaccination status, had to be tested for the coronavirus within 24-hours of air travel.

It is this 24-hour coronavirus testing requirement that the Biden administration is now calling off.

Why now?

Fox News cites an anonymous “senior administration official” for its report. This official says that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has determined that the 24-hour coronavirus testing requirement for air travelers is no longer needed.

This, of course, doesn’t provide much insight. CNBC, on the other hand, provides some more. The outlet reports:

Airlines and others in the travel industry had repeatedly pushed the administration to drop the requirement, arguing it was hurting demand for international trips. The travel industry has been one of the hardest hit by the pandemic.

Whatever the cause may be behind the decision, the testing requirement is now scheduled to come to an end on Sunday at 12:01 a.m. EDT. The CDC, though, is leaving the possibility open of reinstating the restriction in the future.

Per Fox:

The official, speaking Friday on the condition of anonymity to preview the formal announcement, said that the agency would reevaluate the need for the testing requirement every 90 days and that it could be reinstated if a troubling new variant emerges.

Well, what else would you expect from Biden and the Democrats?
