The Biden administration has been busy this week criticizing Border Patrol agents attempting to address the recent influx of Haitian immigrants into Del Rio, Texas.
Now, the White House has announced that horses are no longer allowed to be used in the effort following allegations that mounted agents mistreated the migrants occupying a makeshift camp underneath a bridge.
“We’ll prioritize other methods”
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki announced the change during a news briefing on Thursday.
“I can also convey to you that the [Department of Homeland Security] secretary also conveyed to civil rights leaders earlier this morning that we will no longer be using horses in Del Rio,” she said, according to Breitbart. “That is a policy change that has been made in response.”
One DHS official reportedly confirmed that horses would be “temporarily suspended” in the Del Rio Sector.
“We have ceased the use of the horse patrol in Del Rio temporarily,” the individual stated. “We’ll prioritize other methods for identifying individuals who might be in medical distress.”
Controversy erupted in recent days amid reports that Haitian migrants were being mistreated by border agents on horseback.
“Take us back to slavery days”
While some sources claimed that the officers “whipped” migrants, such allegations were subsequently debunked. Instead, photos that seemed to show agents wielding whips apparently only depicted them holding the reins as they rode their horses.
Nevertheless, a number of progressive Democrats dug into the misleading narrative. At a news conference on Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) claimed that Border Patrol agents were trying to “take us back to slavery days and worse than that.”
Psaki spoke for President Joe Biden, who has been largely silent on the issue.
“I think people should take away that his actions make clear how horrible and horrific these images are, including an investigation, including a change of policy, including conveying clearly that this is not acceptable, and he’s not going to stand for this in the Biden-Harris administration,” the press secretary said.
In the end, it seems clear that the horses did nothing wrong — nor did the agents riding them. Nevertheless, they have all become the latest victims of what many conservative critics dub “cancel culture.”
