Biden administration announces crackdown on ‘ghost guns’

Violent crime continues to rise in the United States, with Fox News reporting that a dozen cities in 2021 set new homicide records.

Yet rather than confronting criminals, the Biden administration has unveiled a new gun control plan that has left many Second Amendment advocates furious.

According to Fox News, President Joe Biden announced new rules on the sale and manufacture of part kits used to construct so-called “ghost guns,” firearms that are privately made by gun owners, which lack proper licensing and serial numbers.

“This should be just a start”

“Today, the United States Department of Justice is making it illegal for a business to manufacture one of these without a serial number,” Biden was quoted as saying during an event at the White House Rose Garden on Monday.

He then picked up one of the weapons that were on display and remarked, “These guns are weapons of choice for many criminals.” Biden added that his administration will “do everything we can deprive them of that choice.”

“Look, this should be just a start,” the president continued before calling on Congress to ban “assault weapons” and limit the capacity of magazines.

The White House put out a press release explaining that the “rule bans the business of manufacturing the most accessible ghost guns, such as unserialized ‘buy build shoot’ kits that individuals can buy online or at a store without a background check and can readily assemble into a working firearm in as little as 30 minutes with equipment they have at home.”

“This rule clarifies that these kits qualify as ‘firearms’ under the Gun Control Act, and that commercial manufacturers of such kits must therefore become licensed and include serial numbers on the kits’ frame or receiver, and commercial sellers of these kits must become federally licensed and run background checks prior to a sale — just like they have to do with other commercially-made firearms,” it added.

Unconstitutional?

However, opponents say Biden’s latest move represents an unconstitutional infringement on the right to bear arms that will do little to stop criminals.

“The Constitution does not authorize the federal government to prevent you from making your own firearm,” Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie (R) tweeted.

“This [is] a fact that has been recognized for 200+ years,” the GOP congressmen stressed, adding, “Also, Article 1, Section 1 (literally the first operative sentence in the Constitution) says Congress makes law, not POTUS!”

Meanwhile, the National Rifle Association (NRA) provided a statement to Fox News that read, “An administration that’s truly sincere and resolute about curbing violent crime rates would do one thing: take violent criminals off the streets immediately. ”
