Even Democrats don’t trust Kamala Harris.
According to a new CNBC report, allies of presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden are waging a “shadow campaign” to keep him from picking the California senator to be his running mate.
Report: Biden allies targeting Harris
With Biden expected to name his running mate sometime in the immediate future, Harris has been seen by many as topping the list, and a recent leak of Biden’s handwritten speech notes led to speculation that she is all but certain to get the job.
But if she is chosen, her success would come in spite of a concerted, month-long effort to thwart her ambitions by a dozen or so Biden supporters, including some top donors, according to the report.
Many would already characterize the Biden campaign as a highly cynical venture, but even some of his backers think that Harris is too power hungry to be trusted.
“She would be running for president the day of the inauguration,” said John Morgan, a businessman and bundler. “For me loyalty and friendship should mean something. But as Bill Clinton once told me, the No. 1 cause of Alzheimer’s is ambition.”
Another backer described Harris as “not loyal at all all and very opportunistic.”
Weighing his options
There has also been speculation that Biden could fall back on a known quantity, Susan Rice, with whom he worked during the Obama administration. As the Daily Wire notes, a group of Obama loyalists, led by Valerie Jarrett, appear to be pushing Rice’s candidacy.
Whomever Biden picks, it’s hardly a secret that his choice will weigh more heavily than is typical, given his age and evident cognitive problems. This particular group of Biden’s backers can hardly be faulted for wondering about Harris’s motives.
Despite their concerns, Biden’s leaked notes on the senator read that he had “great respect for her.” But Harris showed little respect for Biden last year, when she all but called him a racist on national television in the first primary debate. Of course, that was before her own presidential campaign fizzled out. The stunt left at least one member of Biden’s VP search committee stunned by her lack of remorse.
“She laughed and said, ‘that’s politics.’ She had no remorse,” former Senator Chris Dodd told a Biden donor, as Politico noted.
Conservatives aren’t the only ones watching Biden’s veepstakes with some significant trepidation, it seems.
