President Joe Biden just let the cat out of the bag.
According to a new column from author and Crime Prevention Research Center president John Lott, Biden’s comments in a recent interview show he “wants to ban the vast majority of guns in the United States.”
Biden and gun control
The remarks cited by Lott were uttered by Biden at a CNN town hall event in late July.
There, an audience member asked Biden how he plans to “address gun violence from a federal point of view to actually bring about change and make our local cities safer.”
In response, Biden offered a lengthy diatribe in which he argued that “the idea you need a weapon that can have the ability to fire 20, 30, 40, 50, 120 shots from that weapon, whether it’s a…9mm pistol, or whether it’s a rifle, is ridiculous.”
Accordingly, Biden said that he is “continuing to push to eliminate the sale of those things,” according to a transcript from the Daily Wire.
Fact-checking the fact-checker
It didn’t take long for Republicans to begin pointing out the fact that Biden had more or less admitted he is in favor of banning just about all modern guns. The House GOP caucus simply tweeted: “President Biden says he wants to ban handguns.”
That’s when the so-called “fact-checkers” got involved. The left-leaning PolitiFact, for example, swiftly labeled House Republicans’ statement false. “Biden wants to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines,” the fact-checker declared. “The most popular handguns would face no restrictions under Biden’s policies.”
As Lott notes in his own piece, however, the president made no such promise. The columnist explains:
The basis of [PolitiFact’s] conclusion…is that the popular Sig Sauer P365 cannot accommodate more than 10 or 15 rounds. This is untrue. Although that is how the pistol comes from the manufacturer, this gun and virtually all semiautomatics can use bullet magazines that extend well below the pistol grip. The model [PolitiFact] referenced can actually use magazines that hold 20, 30, or even 50 rounds.
Lott accused PolitiFact of falsely asserting “that Biden’s proposed ban would only apply to guns based on their ‘standard magazine’ size.” But Biden, according to Lott, had “talked about banning pistols based on their ‘ability to fire’ or that ‘can hold’ so many rounds.”
“Over 85% of handguns in the U.S. are semiautomatics and would be banned if Biden has his way,” Lott adds.
“Magazines, which are a box with a spring, are easy to make and virtually impossible to stop criminals from obtaining,” the columnist points out. “Let’s not put law-abiding citizens at such a disadvantage by giving them only one shot while criminals may have dozens.”
