With his campaign under scrutiny for failing to condemn riots, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is shifting the blame.
After the fatal shooting of a Trump supporter in Portland, Oregon, Biden accused President Donald Trump of “fanning the flames” and even suggested that the shooting victim was to blame for his own death, according to the Washington Examiner‘s Byron York.
Biden blames Trump, supporters for riots
In Portland, the ongoing unrest turned fatal this weekend after a member of antifa shot and killed a Trump supporter. The killing followed almost 100 days of mob violence that Portland’s Democratic mayor, Ted Wheeler, has handled with a policy of abject appeasement.
Biden responded by calling on Trump to condemn the riots that have played out in cities for months, with little comment from Democrats.
“I condemn this violence unequivocally. I condemn violence of every kind by anyone, whether on the left or the right. And I challenge Donald Trump to do the same,” the former vice president said in a statement.
Biden went on to claim that Trump was “using the politics of fear to whip up his supporters” in Portland, essentially blaming the Trump supporter who was killed for getting shot, as York points out.
Trump slams Biden, Wheeler
Biden’s statement was the latest attempt to recalibrate his campaign’s response to the rioting that, until last week, Democrats insisted were “mostly peaceful protests.”
All of a sudden, Dems have switched to simply blaming Trump for the very anarchy that the president has tried to stop, with little help from Democrats like Ted Wheeler.
Like Biden, Wheeler laid the Sunday killing at Trump’s feet, despite having repeatedly refused help from President Trump in getting control of the city. Wheeler snubbed Trump’s offer of federal assistance again in a pointed open letter on Friday.
For his part, Trump continues to hammer Biden and Wheeler for their negligence.
“When is Slow Joe Biden going to criticize the Anarchists, Thugs & Agitators in ANTIFA? When is he going to suggest bringing up the National Guard in BADLY RUN & Crime Infested Democrat Cities & States? Remember, he can’t lose the Crazy Bernie Super Liberal vote!” Trump tweeted Sunday.
