Biden boarded flight with staffer who has since tested positive for COVID-19: Psaki

As the omicron variant continues to spread throughout the country, a number of prominent figures have reported positive COVID-19 test results in recent days.

According to the Washington Examiner, President Joe Biden confirmed that he was potentially exposed to the virus after boarding a flight with a COVID-positive individual.

“Does not have regular contact”

White House press secretary Jen Psaki issued a statement earlier this week asserting that the “mid-level staff member” tested positive on Monday.

She noted that the individual “does not regularly have contact” with Biden.

“Three days earlier, on Friday, that staff member had spent approximately 30 minutes in proximity to the president on Air Force One on the way from Orange, South Carolina, to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,” Psaki added.

The White House spokesperson went on to explain that the staffer is vaccinated and has received a booster shot.

Furthermore, Psaki said that the individual “tested negative prior to boarding Air Force One, as is required for everyone traveling with the president” and “did not begin to experience symptoms until Sunday and was tested on Monday.”

“It is in the public’s best interest to know”

Psaki also stressed that Biden undergoes regular COVID-19 testing, including an antigen test on Sunday that returned a negative result.

“This morning, after being notified of the staffer’s positive test, the president received a PCR test and tested negative,” she added. “He will be tested again on Wednesday.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention “does not require fully vaccinated people to quarantine after an exposure,” Psaki explained, affirming that Biden “will continue with his daily schedule.”

Despite evidence that the president was not infected, she said the Biden administration has determined that “it is in the public’s interest to know” if the president, first lady, vice president, or second gentlemen have been in contact with someone who shortly thereafter tested positive.

The news comes on the heels of announcements by a handful of other elected officials who experienced a breakthrough COVID-19 infection despite being fully vaccinated. According to Fox News, Sens. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) have both confirmed positive test results.
