Hell froze over on Thursday when President Joe Biden accepted partial responsibility for the “unacceptable” conditions in migrant detention facilities at the border, Breitbart reported.
It marks perhaps the first time Biden acknowledged that “kids in cages” is still a phenomenon, despite his administration’s continued deflections on the ongoing immigration crisis. However, Biden is still trying to blame former President Donald Trump.
“That’s a serious question?”
In February, roughly 100,000 migrants were apprehended at the border, and there are now thousands of migrant children in crowded Border Patrol holding facilities, according to reports.
The Biden administration has struggled for weeks to respond to the crisis, as well as public scrutiny of it, and they have only raised further questions by refusing to let journalists access the facilities.
At Biden’s first full press conference on Thursday, he was repeatedly asked about the humanitarian disaster. According to Breitbart, ABC News reporter Cecilia Vega questioned Biden on a facility in Donna, Texas that attracted significant attention this week when images of children living in squalid “pods” surfaced.
She mentioned that children are “sleeping on floors” and that the facility was said to be at more than 1,500% of its capacity. Asked whether Biden finds that “acceptable,” he said he did not.
“That’s a serious question, right? Is this acceptable? Come on,” Biden said, as Breitbart reported. “That is totally unacceptable.”
Still passing the buck
It was a somewhat surprising answer after weeks of equivocation from the administration on what they have refused to call a “crisis.” However, it appears that getting Biden to take ownership of the problem will be a bit like pulling teeth.
Elsewhere in the briefing, the president refused to say when facilities will be made transparent, saying, “I don’t know, to be clear.” And, preposterously, he continued to pass the buck, blaming Trump for the mess.
According to the New York Post, Biden said he was “flattered” that migrants perceive him as “nice,” but insisted his decision to relax Trump’s policies is not driving the problem, that Trump’s policies were “not helping at all,” and that there is nothing unusual about the current surge.
“The truth of the matter is, nothing has changed,” he said. “The reason they’re coming is that it’s the time they can travel with the least likelihood of dying on the way because of the heat in the desert… I’d like to think it’s because I’m a nice guy, but it’s not.”
But even the migrants say that they are coming because of Biden. Try as they might, this one problem the White House can’t blame on the evil Orange Man. This is all on Biden.
