No Democrat has received more praise, or criticism, for their coronavirus response than New York’s Democrat governor Andrew Cuomo — but if a new report is accurate, his detractors haven’t seen anything yet.
According to Axios, Joe Biden is considering Cuomo to be his attorney general if he wins the presidential election.
Governor’s association scouting replacement
The speculation is based on Cuomo’s long-time friendship with Biden and “Democratic donors within Cuomo’s orbit,” as well as the fact that the National Governors Association, which Cuomo chairs, is looking into contingencies for replacing him.
The report claims that Biden is looking at Cuomo, Stacey Abrams, and Sally Yates for the job.
If true, the report is liable to send shudders through many Americans in light of Cuomo’s polarizing response to the coronavirus, which has been criticized by many as inept, hypocritical, and tyrannical.
Cuomo has come under the heaviest criticism for a policy that sent coronavirus patients into nursing homes, resulting in the deaths of thousands of vulnerable seniors. The Democrat has never taken responsibility for the tragedy, opting to blame the federal government instead.
“To be clear, New York’s problem was caused by federal negligence. New York was ambushed by Covid. I believe that this was on a par with the greatest failure to detect an enemy attack since Pearl Harbor,” he writes in his new book.
That blame reflex could help explain a reluctance to seek higher office. Speculation about bigger ambitions shot up earlier this year as Cuomo received gushing praise for his handling of the pandemic, which has killed more people in New York than in any other state.
But the governor has continually played coy about any larger aspirations than holding onto the seat once held by his father Mario, and he has seemed content for the time being with bragging about a job well done while peddling a new book about his leadership in the crisis.
Responding to the latest rumors Monday, Cuomo said he is not interested in the role but would help Biden “in any way I can.”
“I’m a New Yorker,” Cuomo told NBC’s “Today.” “I said I would serve as governor, and those rumors, those are only from people who want to get me out of New York. I don’t know why but that’s where that’s coming from.”
“I have no interest in going to Washington,” Cuomo continued. “I said when this COVID situation started, just so I had total credibility with the people of the state, I’m not running for president. I’m not running for vice president.”
