Biden gives immigration official a ‘quit or be fired’ ultimatum

Fox News reports that an immigration official is refusing to leave after the administration of President Joe Biden told him that if he doesn’t resign he’ll be fired.

That official is Chris Magnus, the embattled commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Background

Magnus has been the commissioner of the CBP for about a year now. During that stint, America has witnessed record illegal immigration numbers.

During the 2022 fiscal year, which just recently ended in September, the CBP had almost 2.4 million illegal immigrant encounters at the southern border. This includes several months of over 200,000 encounters, including September, which saw over 227,000 such encounters.

It’s hard to place all the blame for these numbers on Magnus, considering that he has to follow policies set by Biden. But, astronomically high illegal immigration numbers aren’t Magnus’s only problem.

During his year in office, Magnus has faced multiple controversies. They include reports that Magnus falls asleep during meetings and reports that Magnus previously settled a sexual harassment and retaliation case from 2017 that involved a subordinate police officer.

It is with all of this in mind that Republicans have been calling upon the Biden administration to fire Magnus. Magnus has fought back against the criticism that he has faced. But, it now appears that the Biden administration is ready to part ways with Magnus.

That latest

This past week, reports emerged indicating that the Biden administration – specifically Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas – has given Magnus an ultimatum: either resign or be fired.

Magnus has since made it clear that he is not resigning. He did so in an email that he sent to senior staff members of the CBP.

Magnus wrote:

I want to make this clear: I have no plans to resign as CBP Commissioner. I didn’t take this job as a resume builder. I came to Washington, D.C.— moved my family here— because I care about this agency, its mission, and the goals of this Administration.

The Biden administration has yet to comment on the matter.

But, it appears that if Biden really wants Magnus gone he is going to have to follow through on his threat of termination.
