Presumptive Democrat nominee Joe Biden has yet to pick a running mate for the general election, but speculation is building about who may be on his shortlist.
Biden confirmed that he would pick former First Lady Michelle Obama for the job “in a heartbeat” if she would go along with it while speaking to CBS Pittsburgh on Monday.
Rooting for Michelle
When asked by the interviewer if he has considered adding Michelle Obama to the ticket, he responded, “I’d take her in a heartbeat.”
“She’s brilliant. She knows the way around. She is a really fine woman. The Obamas are great friends,” but hedged, “I don’t think she has any desire to live near the White House again.”
The Hill reported last week that Obama was in talks with Biden to formally endorse his campaign as well as possibly join it in some capacity.
A Biden aide told the publication that “We know what pretty much everyone in America does: Michelle Obama is probably the most beloved member of the Democratic Party and her support is a big deal. Any future announcement would reflect the incredible impact her voice has.”
The former first lady is reportedly negotiating to lend her star power to various email and virtual fundraising campaigns for Biden, though details have yet to be released.
Other candidates in the running
Michelle Obama has been historically reluctant to jump into the political fray, preferring to prioritize her own nonpartisan causes. Her latest project, “When We All Vote,” is a group that seeks to increase voter registration across the political spectrum and has recently begun campaigning for Democrat-led mail-in voting measures.
Because of this, speculation is building that though Biden might jump at the opportunity to bring Obama onto the ticket, it’s not a very realistic notion.
Biden has pledged to choose a female running mate, however, and reaffirmed that promise in Monday’s interview. “I’ll commit to that [it will] be a woman because it is very important that my administration look like the public, look like the nation,” he said.
Breitbart reported that the Biden campaign is vetting a number of possible candidates for VP, including former primary opponents Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Kamala Harris (D-CA), and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN).
Other women thought to be under consideration for the job include embattled Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and failed Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacy Abrams.
