Within days of taking office, President Joe Biden has signed dozens of executive orders as part of his bid to undo what was accomplished under the administration of former President Donald Trump.
One of those executive orders revokes the limitations Trump had instituted on transgender individuals serving in the U.S. military — a move based on political correctness and leftist identity politics that some critics warn will undermine military readiness and unit cohesion, Breitbart reported.
“Free from discrimination”
Biden’s order on Monday declared that “an inclusive military strengthens our national security” and, as such, “gender identity should not be a bar to military service.”
“Therefore, it shall be the policy of the United States to ensure that all transgender individuals who wish to serve in the United States military and can meet the appropriate standards shall be able to do so openly and free from discrimination,” the order reads.
With a stroke of a pen, Biden then revoked two Presidential Memorandums issued by Trump in 2017 and 2018 related to transgender military service.
Members allowed to rejoin
According to a “fact sheet” released by Biden’s White House, the new order provides directives to the secretaries of both the Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security — which oversees the U.S. Coast Guard — to “take all necessary steps to ensure that all directives, orders, regulations, and policies of their respective departments are consistent with this order.”
That includes launching an immediate review of all military service members, past and present, to identify anyone who had been “involuntarily separated, discharged, or denied reenlistment or continuation of service” solely on the basis of their gender identity.
Further, the order insists that military records for such individuals should be corrected and, in some cases, invitations should be extended for those individuals to rejoin the service. In signing the order, Biden remarked, “this is reinstating a position that previous commanders and — as well as the Secretaries have supported.”
“And what I’m doing is enabling all qualified Americans to serve their country in uniform, and essentially restoring the situation as it existed before, with transgender personnel, if qualified in every other way, can serve their government in the United States military,” he added.
As noted by Breitbart, the supposed “ban” on transgender military service that so enraged the left was never really a complete ban, but merely a requirement that transgender members serve as their biological gender and not suffer from the psychiatric diagnoses of gender dysphoria.
Furthermore, while Trump may have signed those prior policies, they were the result of a thorough review ordered by military leaders in response to Obama administration orders.
Specifically, they were recommended to Trump by then-Defense Secretary Jim Mattis over legitimate concerns about readiness and unit capabilities and cohesion — concerns that military leaders will have to deal with once again.
