Democrats have seized upon a pair of recent mass shootings to promote their anti-gun agenda, something that was on display Monday when President Joe Biden spoke with reporters after stepping off Marine One.
Yet while Biden made a number of remarks concerning the Second Amendment and various weapons, a quick check of the facts show that his words don’t match up with reality.
President falsely claims that Americans could not purchase cannons
“I mean, I just — and remember, the Constitution, the Second Amendment was never absolute,” Biden said according to a White House transcript.
“You couldn’t buy a cannon when the Second Amendment was passed. You couldn’t go out and purchase a lot of weapons,” he insisted.
In fact, not only could cannons be purchased in 18th Century America, but they continue to be privately owned today.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) explains on its website that any weapon that “is not designed or redesigned for using rimfire or conventional centerfire fixed ammunition” is not only legal but exempt from federal regulations surrounding firearm ownership.
What’s more, cannon owners often gather with their weapons to reenact battles from the Civil War as well as other conflicts.
The president also implied semiautomatic rifles are exclusively used for criminal purposes, saying that “there’s only one reason for something that can fire, you know, 100 shots.”
Biden insists that there is “no rational basis” for owning a 9mm handgun
However, FBI figures show that in 2019 (the last year for which complete data is available), only 364 people were murdered using rifles of any kind.
This is despite the National Shooting Sports Foundation reporting that semiautomatic rifles are among the most commonly sold firearms in America, suggesting that such weapons are far more often purchased for lawful uses.
In what was perhaps his most bizarre remark, the president characterized 9mm pistols as being “high-caliber weapons” for which there is no “rational basis” when it comes to hunting or self-defense.
This claim was especially odd given how 9mm handguns are frequently issued to law enforcement officers, including the Secret Service Agents who Biden relies on for protection.
