New information about one of President Joe Biden’s judicial nominees was recently uncovered that could give conservatives who are concerned about the nation’s election integrity reason to panic.
As The Daily Wire revealed in a report published Friday, lawyer Nancy Gbana Abudu has suggested that modern laws barring criminals from voting in the nation’s elections are akin to slavery.
“When you add laws that prohibit people with a criminal conviction from voting, it’s practically the same system as during slavery — Black people who have lost their freedom and cannot vote,” Abudu wrote in a 2020 article for the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), according to The Daily Wire.
“And without access to the ballot, a victim of the system cannot elect the very officials pulling the levers to hire the police, determine which cases are prosecuted and what sentences are imposed,” she added.
Nominee claims “voter suppression”
Abudu previously worked for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). For its report, The Daily Wire cited a 2011 interview in which she said that “95 percent” of her time was spent on matters related to voting.
Abudu later characterized a variety of election integrity measures as examples of “voter suppression.”
According to The Daily Wire, this includes laws surrounding “photo ID, proof of citizenship, restrictions we see when it comes to registration…early voting as well as absentee voting and the restrictions we see when it comes to criminal convictions.”
Biden’s stamp on the judiciary
The temperature of Abudu’s rhetoric has consistently remained elevated, as demonstrated by a piece she wrote this past August for the SPLC.
In it, she declared that Democrats’ John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is essential “to protect the future of American democracy.”
Abudu also suggested that lawmakers who oppose the bill are following the example shown by “pro-Jim Crow senators of the past,” as The Daily Wire reported.
It’s not an altogether surprising stance to come from one of Biden’s judicial nominees. Ilya Shapiro serves as director of the Robert A. Levy Center for Constitutional Studies, and she told The Daily Wire that Abudu’s beliefs are consistent with those of other “ideological” federal judges who have been nominated by the president.
“Biden has focused not only on checking demographic boxes, however, but on nominating public defenders, activists, and others with backgrounds considered ‘non-traditional’ for federal judges,” Shapiro told The Daily Wire. “It’s good to add different perspectives to the bench, but it also means that many of these nominees are more progressive and ideological than previous Democratic picks.”
