President Joe Biden gave a surprisingly blunt response to the doping controversy over athlete Sha’Carri Richardson, who likely disqualified herself from the 2020 Olympics over marijuana use.
“The rules are the rules,” Biden said of the Olympic athlete’s suspension during a stop in Michigan on Saturday, according to The Hill.
Biden “proud” of Richardson
Biden said he was “proud” that she accepted responsibility for the mistake, and he questioned whether the rules should stay. But he did not contradict Richardson’s suspension after testing positive for THC, the psychoactive chemical in marijuana.
“Rules are the rules. Everybody knows what the rules are going in,” Biden said. “Whether they should remain that way, whether that should remain the rule, is a different issue. Rules are rules. And I was really proud of the way she responded.”
Richardson won the women’s 100-meter dash in Olympic trials last month in Oregon, a liberal state where pot is legal. But it is not kosher according to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.
She apologized and said that she was using marijuana to cope after her mother died.
“I know what I did. I know what I’m supposed to do. I know what I’m allowed not to do, and I still made that decision,” Richardson said.
Dems blame “racism”
While Richardson accepted fault, a bevy of celebrities, athletes, and progressive politicians made her out to be a victim. Biden was much less sympathetic than Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who accused the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency of “systemic racism.”
“Their decision lacks any scientific basis,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “It’s rooted solely in the systemic racism that’s long driven anti-marijuana laws.”
In an unusual turn of events, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who is known for his liberal stance on drug laws, also spoke in Richardson’s defense, according to the New York Post.
In this instance, Biden seemed to show a flash of his old self. Despite his “woke” evolution, it is no secret that Biden has long opposed legalizing marijuana, which has made him a source of frustration and ridicule for the left as nationwide attitudes on pot have relaxed significantly in recent years.
A broken clock is right twice a day. It’s truly a shame, but as Biden said, the rules are the rules. If only Biden dealt with the border with such candor.
