The Biden administration has faced widespread criticism over its response to an ongoing surge in migration along the U.S.–Mexico border.
Now, President Joe Biden is inviting even more backlash with his decision to force out the U.S. Border Patrol chief.
“These are both career officials”
Rodney Scott, who was appointed by former President Donald Trump, has been with the border agency for nearly three decades. His impending ouster is seen by many on the right as the latest evidence of a political purge by the White House.
Scott supported many of Trump’s immigration policies, including the construction of a border wall, but it is clear that Biden has other plans.
One insider told the Washington Examiner that Scott’s termination is an “unprecedented” move with clear partisan motives. The same unnamed source pointed out that Bob Perez was also forced out of his role as Customs and Border Protection deputy commissioner.
“These are both career officials,” the insider noted.
In a Facebook post this week, Scott confirmed that he received a letter calling on him to “relocate, resign, or retire” from his post.
“These last few crazy months”
While no justification for the decision is required by law, Scott asserted that he was being removed “so the new administration can place the person they want in the position.”
He went on to express gratitude to those who have supported him “over these last few crazy months” and shared his confidence “that God is in control.”
As for his replacement, it seems likely that Biden will replace Scott with a loyalist more in line with the current administration’s more lenient position on immigration and border issues.
Biden has provided evidence in the past that he is willing to purge Trump-era holdovers from the military and other government entities in order to replace them with ideologues who will work to accomplish the Democratic Party’s goals — and those efforts might already be paying off.
Of course, critics say the result is a nation that has become less safe with illegal border crossings exploding to their highest rates in two decades. Some Border Patrol agents have reportedly considered resigning in protest because they claim Biden’s policies are making it nearly impossible for them to do their jobs.
