Throughout his campaign for president, Joe Biden pledged to undo many of the immigration policies that were enacted under former President Donald Trump.
In another step to undermine Trump’s legacy, President Biden ordered immigration officials not to warn undocumented migrants that fraudulent behavior could result in deportation, the Washington Examiner reported Sunday.
The move is said to stem from concerns that those caught lying about the use of public services or providing false information during a green card application could experience “undue stress.”
“This guidance will ensure the agency is not placing undue stress on the customer who believes he/she may or may not receive an NTA based on the information provided in their denial notification,” an email to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services read, according to the Examiner.
A spokesperson reportedly explained that “U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services recently rescinded two 2018 policy memos related to the issuance of Notices to Appear when processing requests for immigration benefits.”
“The agency was directed to rescind the relevant policy in a DHS memo issued on Jan. 20. USCIS will release additional implementation guidance on this issue in the near future,” the spokesperson said, as the Examiner reported.
Jessica Vaughan, who serves as director of policy studies for the Center for Immigration Studies, blasted the announcement.
“Since when is the law not enforced because the person who broke it might become upset or stressed?” she pressed, according to the Examiner.
“It’s bad enough that they are not enforcing the law anymore, but it’s ridiculous that their utmost concern is the feelings of the people who are breaking the law,” Vaughan added. “Apparently they do not want any illegal aliens, even those who tried to lie or cheat their way to a green card, to be worried about possible deportation.”
Biden announced a 100-day moratorium on deportations early in his presidency, although that decision has been temporarily blocked by a federal judge, Fox News reported.
As a candidate, Biden said he would go easy on those who were in the country illegally, even telling Vice News that he would fire ICE agents who arrested illegal aliens caught driving under the influence of alcohol.
“You are fired if, in fact, you do that,” Biden said during the 2019 Brown & Black Democratic Presidential Forum. “You only arrest for the purpose of dealing with a felony that’s committed, and I don’t count drunk driving as a felony.”
