Biden admin considers shutting down major oil pipeline during energy crisis

While Americans across the country struggle to afford higher gas prices, a new report suggests that the situation could soon become much worse, if the Biden administration has its way.

According to Breitbart, the Biden administration is reportedly considering shutting down a major oil pipeline that carries oil from Western Canada to Michigan known as the Line 5 oil pipeline.

A Daily Mail piece explained that a group of Native American tribes seek to have the pipeline, which has operated for almost eight decades, decommissioned, citing environmental concerns.

For its part, the Biden White House moved on Monday to deny that it has given any consideration towards shutting it down, though it later admitted that it’s studying the possibility of doing so, as Fox News noted.

Will it shut down?

White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre, according to the Associated Press, told reporters, “That is something that we’re not going to do.”

However, the pipeline faces difficulties from Michigan’s Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, with Detroit’s Metro News reporting that she is fighting to revoke the pipeline’s easement.

The controversy surrounding Line 5 comes at the same time energy prices, especially gasoline, continue to soar, a fact that even U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm recently acknowledged.

“The president is all over this,” Granholm told CNN Sunday. “Of course, every president is frustrated because they can’t control the price of gasoline, because it’s a global market. You can call upon increased supply, which he has done.”

“And OPEC is, unfortunately, controlling the agenda with respect to oil prices,” Granholm argued. “OPEC is a cartel and it controls over 50 percent of the supply of gasoline.”

Laughs in response

Fox Business reported that Granholm burst out laughing after she was asked Friday by Bloomberg host Tom Keene if the administration is planning to boost domestic oil production, calling the idea “hilarious,” and suggesting that it would require a “magic wand” to do so.

Her bizarre reaction brought a sharp response from Fox News host Sean Hannity, who excoriated President Joe Biden for reversing his predecessor’s energy policies, which had America on the track to energy independence.

“What is funny about that?” Hannity demanded. “We were energy independent. Instead of begging OPEC and getting rejected for the ninth time, we can produce more oil, more gas right here in America. It creates high paying career jobs in the energy sector. It reduces shipping costs.”
