‘We’re going to fix them all’: Biden visits Pittsburgh shortly after local bridge collapses

According to Fox News, a Pittsburgh bridge collapsed on Friday morning just before President Joe Biden was scheduled to visit the city to talk about infrastructure, and he promised his administration would “fix them all.”

Biden said he had no idea there were more bridges in Pittsburgh “than any other city in the world, including Venice.”

“I knew there were a lot of bridges — I had no idea of that. And we’re gonna fix them all. It’s not a joke. This is going to be a gigantic change. There’s 43,000 nationwide, and we’re sending them money,” Biden said, according to Fox News.

But as with many of Biden’s policies, it seems like too little, too late. Isn’t the idea of infrastructure to fix the bridge before it collapses?

Mayor on board

Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey (R) seems to be drinking the Kool-Aid. He praised Biden’s visit and said his $1 trillion infrastructure bill was important, and needed.

“We know we have bridges we need to take care of. For him coming today to talk about why this funding is so important … this is critical we get this funding,” Gainey told WITF.

Nearly 20% of the state’s bridges were rated in poor condition by the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the state’s bridges overall were graded “D+.”

Perhaps some infrastructure spending is needed, but isn’t it supposed to first be handled by the state rather than the federal government?

The collapse

Ten people were reportedly injured in the bridge collapse, which occurred when a bus was crossing the bridge. Three of the passengers were hospitalized, but all of them are now in stable condition and, thankfully, there were no casualties reported.

First responders had to rappel 150 feet to rescue trapped motorists and passengers, and some passersby also formed a human chain to rescue others.

There was a gas leak in the area of the collapse and some homes were evacuated as a precaution. The leak was contained after a few hours.

There’s no doubt this is not the only bridge in the state at risk of collapse, but Biden is too busy talking the talk instead of walking the walk to prevent further incidents.
